OSB (Oriented Strand Board) Production Process

Do you know what is the Production step for making OSB boards?

1. Raw material preparation
 - Wood selection: Fast-growing wood (such as poplar, pine, etc.) or wood processing residues (such as offcuts, wood chips) are usually used.

 - Peeling and cutting: After the logs are peeled, they are processed into long strip-shaped wood shavings (about 50-100mm in length and 0.5-0.8mm in thickness) by a slicer.

 - Drying: Wet wood shavings need to pass through a dryer (such as a drum dryer) to reduce their moisture content to 2% to 4%.

2. Gluing and mixing
Adhesives: Commonly used are MDI (isocyanate) or phenolic resin adhesives (when high waterproofing requirements are needed).

Mixing method: Evenly mix the wood shavings with the adhesive (about 3% to 8% of the adhesive amount) through a mixer. Wax (water repellent) or preservative can be added

3. Paving and shaping
Directional laying: Mechanical or manual laying is adopted. The surface layer of wood shavings is arranged along the length of the board, while the core layer is arranged horizontally (cross structure), forming a 3-layer or 5-layer structure.

Equipment: Small laying machines or simple laying formwork. It is necessary to control the uniformity and thickness of the laying

4. Pre-pressing and hot pressing
Pre-pressing: Cold pressing for initial shaping reduces the exhaust time during hot pressing.

Hot pressing: Use a multi-layer hot press (temperature 180~220℃, pressure 3~5MPa, time approximately 3~8 minutes) to cure and form the adhesive.

5. Cooling and trimming
Cooling: The sheet material is naturally cooled or cooled down by a fan after coming out of the press to stabilize its size.

Edge trimming: Saw off the rough edges to ensure uniform board specifications (common sizes: 1220×2440mm, thickness 6~25mm)

6. Packaging and Storage
Packaging: Wrapped with moisture-proof film to prevent moisture during transportation.

Storage: Store in a dry and well-ventilated environment, flat to prevent deformation
