MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)

Medium density fiberboard, usually simply referred to as MDF, is the English name for this type of artificial board which is widely used. It is made by crushing wood fibers or plant fibers, mixing them with synthetic resins and waterproofing agents, and then pressing them under high temperature and high pressure. Due to its uniform internal structure and smooth, flat surface, it is often used to make furniture, door panels, floor substrates, and even the shells of audio equipment and musical instruments.

How to make MDF Board?

The production of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is an industrial process of "breaking down and reshaping" wood raw materials. It mainly consists of four stages: raw material preparation and fiber production, sizing and drying, laying and hot pressing, and post-treatment.

Raw material preparation: The main raw materials used are small-diameter wood, branch wood, and wood processing residues. First, they are shaved into uniformly sized wood chips (for example, approximately 16-30mm in length and 3-5mm in thickness), and then sieved and de-ironing is carried out to remove impurities.

Steaming and softening: Place the wood chips in the steaming cylinder and use high-temperature and high-pressure steam for softening. The common process conditions are a temperature of 145-178℃, a pressure of 0.6-1.0 MPa, and a steaming time of 1-4 minutes; Thermal grinding separation: The softened wood chips are sent to the thermal grinder, where they are decomposed into fine wood fibers through mechanical grinding at a temperature of approximately 130-145℃.

Gluing (Spraying Glue): At the fiber outlet pipe of the hot mill, the adhesive (the most commonly used is urea-formaldehyde resin glue) is evenly sprayed onto the fibers through a strong airflow. This process is also called "pipe gluing". The gluing amount is usually about 110-200 kilograms of glue per cubic meter of fiber board. To reduce the release of formaldehyde, "formaldehyde capture agents" or modified adhesive may also be added to the glue solution.

Drying: The moisture content of the fibers after treatment is very high (about 47%), and it needs to be dried quickly using a tube dryer. The fibers are blown forward by hot air to rapidly reduce their moisture content to 5%-12% to meet the requirements of subsequent laying and hot pressing. The drying temperature is usually controlled at around 160-180℃.

Forming process: After drying and applying glue, the fibers are evenly spread onto the conveyor belt through an air flow or mechanical laying machine, forming a fluffy and uniformly thick "blank" /Mattress.

Pre-compression: The fluffy billet is first subjected to preliminary compression by a pre-compression machine to achieve a certain degree of strength, making it easier for it to enter the hot press machine. The compression rate is usually controlled at around 40% - 58%.

Cooling and trimming: The temperature of the board  after hot pressing is very high. It needs to be cooled and "nurtured" through a flipping cooling machine to release the internal stress. Then, the irregular edges will be trimmed as per the requirements.

Sanding: Use a sanding machine to finely polish the surface of the board, making its thickness precise and the surface smooth and flat, so as to facilitate subsequent coating or veneering.
